World Energy Dialogue 2007: Focus on energy-efficient technology

International Energy Congress at HANNOVERMESSE addresses the global challenge to improve energy efficiency The experts who meet at the World Energy Dialogue 2007 will form a central element of the program of events dedicated to energy issues at HANNOVER MESSE. Under the patronage of the German Ministry for Economic Affairs and Technology, the World Energy Dialogue is being organized jointly by Deutsche Messe and the Federation of German Industry (Bundesverband der Deutschen Industrie – BDI). Professor Dr. Dr. h. c. Klaus Töpfer has assumed chairmanship of the Congress.

The World Energy Dialogue 2007 opens on 17 April, the second day of HANNOVER MESSE 2007, and closes on 19 April 2007. It will take place in the Convention Center located at the Exhibition Grounds in Hannover.
Due to the success of the premiere event in April 2006, which attracted more than 570 participants from 20 countries, the World Energy Dialogue will now feature permanently on the program of the world’s biggest showcase of industrial technology. This year, the Congress will focus on the vital issue of how to improve energy efficiency.
New award for efficiency
In accordance with the pressing nature of this issue, the World Energy Dialogue 2007 will see the launch of a new project – the Energy Efficiency Award – in recognition of innovative companies from industry and commerce which have made an outstanding contribution to improving energy efficiency. This new international prize, worth a total of 20,000 euros, will be awarded by the German Energy Agency (Deutsche Energie-Agentur GmbH – dena) in cooperation with the trade fair organizers, DeutscheMesse.
Companies are invited to submit relevant projects by 28 February 2007 – the organizers of the award expressly encourage the participation of small and medium-sized companies.
As Sepp D. Heckmann, Chairman of the Board of Deutsche Messe, points out: “The winners of the award will thus benefit two-fold from their investment in increased energy efficiency. Apart from the prize money, they will also receive a
prestigious award for their successful efforts and be seen as exemplary protagonists of energy efficiency and conservation.”
The competition represents part of the Energy Efficiency Initiative, which creates a platform for various activities and ideas for the efficient utilization of electricity in all areas of consumption. This initiative is supported by dena in collaboration with major energy suppliers (E.ON, EnBW, RWE and Vattenfall Europe) and has the support of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Technology. Detailed information and application forms are available online at www.industrie-energieeffizienz.de.
Efficiency as an export factor
Participants at the recent Energy Summit held by the German government expressed the view that energy-saving technology, i.e. the ability to improve energy efficiency, could prove an important factor in the international marketing of German cutting-edge technology.
In this connection Michael Glos, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Technology, has announced a new export drive based on energy-efficient technology. Increasing energy efficiency forms a cornerstone of energy-related policies. Importantly, the use of modern technology to reduce energy consumption reduces the dependency of nation states on imports, and also leads to lower energy costs. Furthermore, the quest for new energy technology encourages innovation and makes an important contribution to the control of climate change.
In the event of long-term increases in energy prices the development of this kind of technology would become an even more important competitive factor than it already is today. The German government has emphasized the huge potential for energy-saving technology. In fact, government policy aims to double energy productivity by 2020 compared with levels in 1990. This goal applies to all areas of energy consumption – from power stations and buildings to vehicles. The German Energy Agency estimates that on the basis of improved utilization the country will be able to reduce energy consumption in 2020 by more than 20 percent compared with 2005.
Focus on the energy distribution markets
Dramatic changes in the global energy markets as well as changes to the legal conditions are posing new and more challenging demands on regional and municipal energy suppliers in Germany. In the wake of the EU energy law affecting concessions the state now intervenes to regulate the market. At the same time the market is subject to rising energy prices, the increasingly vocal
demands of consumers and ongoing market consolidation and concentration.
How municipal and regional utility companies respond to this situation and turn it round in their favour is the central theme of the symposium “enercity energie dialog 2007”. Held last year under the title “The future of municipal companies in Germany – the road to competition”, the symposium makes the municipal companies of Hannover an integral part of the World Energy Dialogue for the second time.
The symposium will be taking place on 18 April 2007 from 1.00 p.m. in the conference area (“Saal Europa”) of Hall 1 in conjunction with HANNOVER MESSE. Afterwards, participants in the “enercity energie dialog” and the World Energy Dialogue are invited to the enercity expo Café am Kröpcke in Hannover’s city center, where once again it will be “open house” to Congress attendees.
